Third Grade:
Becoming Competent Scholars and Responsible Citizens
Students work year-round on what will ultimately be a personalized bound book of their own work at the end of third grade. The collection includes well-developed creative writing, poetry, essays, reports, and selected works from classmates, special memories and photographs. The year begins with a trip to the Book Bindery, so that the children can see how all of their work will be bound into a book at the end of the year. This has become a special keepsake that highlights the important memories of third grade.
Literature Circles, similar to adult Book Clubs, occur throughout the year as well. Students are assigned certain jobs while reading - such as discussion director - and they each are responsible for teaching the other students. Literature Circles help improve reading comprehension and writing skills, as well as responsibility and accountability.
Social studies and science become more important, as breadth of knowledge, higher level thinking about complex subject matter, and content comprehension are emphasized. Native American culture and the rain forest are examples of topics that challenge the students.
A Field Day will be the grand finale of several valuable field trips. The students will learn teamwork and orienteering skills.
