Gulls on the Go! Alumni Spotlight: Matthew Bauer (Class of 2006)

Once a student at WWS, now a doctor in residency for internal medicine at the Naval Medical Center San Diego, Matthew Bauer shared with us a summary of what he has done since graduating from WWS. His route from our Middle School to medical school was a bit circuitous, but also demonstrative of his best self.

After graduating from Point Loma High School, Matthew chose UC Berkeley from which to earn a degree (in 3.5 years!) in Molecular & Cell Biology, with a focus in Neuroscience. Then he came home to take care of his mo, Sheila, as she battled breast cancer, survive, and now has been cancer free for over five years. In 2011, needing to begin to support himself, Matthew moved to Chicago to work in the Chicago Public School district. This was with. program called Teach for America, through which he taught fifth and sixth grade Math and Science for two years at an elementary and middle school.

Matthew then joined the Navy, earned a scholarship through the "Health Professionals Scholarship Program" and went to Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine , graduating in 2017 with his M.D. During this time, he met his wife, Willa, while they were both volunteering at the local, free clinic. She was getting her Masters in Nursing while he was finishing his degree, and after graduation they moved to San Diego where they now reside.

As of Fall 2019t, Matthew had completed his second year of residency in internal medicine at the Naval Medical Center and had begun his third year of three which brings us to the present! We welcome him back to San Diego. He has accomplished so much since moving from his family home "The Bauer House", which sits on the Point Loma campus, today, and is now our newly renovated "Art & Science Cottage"!
