Jewels from Coffees with the Heads
Our 2013 Coffees with the Heads were very fruitful meetings achieving our goal to share important and helpful information face-to-face with the parents of our first through eighth grade students. Responding to parent concerns and answering questions is essential. One pertinent question was about accessing books per the Lexile measure reported on the ERB/CTP test report per child beginning with the first grade results.
Thanks to new parent, Katherine Spengler (Anna, LM 1st), this information arrived via email soon after our last Coffee. It is the answer to the question about finding books at the specified level, and how that relates to the Fountas and Pinnell levels we use at Warren-Walker School. She recommended Book Wizard by Scholastic, where one can search for books either by Fountas & Pinnell level (A –Z) or Lexile: http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/
Additionally, she included the link to the Lexile.com website. She noted that “the database is humongous, and books that aren't found on Book Wizard are often found on Lexile.com. Parents can either type in a book in the upper right hand corner and get the Lexile level, or search by Lexile level for recommended texts using the search engine on the left side of the page: http://www.lexile.com.”
Certainly, none of us has previewed all the books on these lists, so parental discretion is recommended. I will follow up with more information related to our Coffee with the Heads presentations and discussions. Thank you to everyone who attended and shared!
