The safety of your children is always a top priority for you. You talk to your children about not talking to strangers, have emergency contingencies at home, immunize them against disease. You try to be proactive. But there is an important area that you sometimes overlook or may not be aware of how pervasive a concern it is.
It is the way your child interacts in the world of social media. Kids are frequently ahead of their parents. Many adults can barely keep up with the rapidly changing technology and software. Children are having access to Smart phones, tablets, etc. at younger and younger ages.
This week in both 8th grade and 6th grade several questions were posed about Instagram and Snapchat. It was very evident that the majority of students did not know how vulnerable they were. They didn't know there were settings that told exactly where they were, who they are, and what they are doing that moment and WHO CAN HAVE ACCESS TO THAT INFORMATION.
There is an important talk next week presented by WeCare, a consortium of area schools who bring speakers to the area. Lori Getz, an Internet Safety Specialist, will be speaking on "Bridging the Digital Divide- How to ensure your child's Internet Safety". Every parent should know about what's out there and what you can do to protect your child. The information is on our website. Please make time in your very busy lives to attend. You will gain valuable information.
