Reflecting on the Building Resilience Model

As a follow up to Dr. Kenneth Ginsburg's WeCare presentation and our Coffees with the Heads, I decided to highlight the keys to building resilience that seemed to resonate with the Warren-Walker community.  At each of the Coffees, Mr. Volker asked those who had heard Dr. Ginsburg's talk to tell me one of the 'take-aways' that you remember and have found helpful. These were the most frequent responses:

  • maintain high expectations
  • encourage effort and avoid telling children that they are so "smart"
  • focus on progress and growth, not perfection
  • accept that everyone has strengths and weaknesses; focus on the strengths
  • listen to children more than you talk to them
  • reduce stress through positive coping strategies like play, exercise, and problem-solving
  • remember that the bumps and bruises along the way help to make children stronger and more resilient

Thank you for the input and for helping us make the Coffees more relevant and wothwhile.  We will make sure Dr. Ginsburg's book is availabe at the upcoming Lower School Book Fairs.  More information from his talk and book can be found on his website:
