Last week Ms. Huntress received a phone call from a senior citizen thanking Warren-Walker Middle School for the special birthday box he received. For several years the Middle School had done an in-school service project for Meals-on-Wheels. Each year we receive calls or notes of thanks. Community Service is an important component of our Middle School program.
Last Tuesday and Thursday the energy at Middle School was diverted to the San Diego Food Bank. The 7th and 8th grade volunteered there as a part of our Community Service program. The Student Council sponsors at least one service project each quarter so students will easily be able to complete the 8 hours required each year. 3000 pounds of broccoli were successfully sorted and bagged!
The 6th grade will have the opportunity to visit the Food Bank in April. 6th grade also has a fun project with the Preschool next door. A small group of students goes once a week and reads with the Kindergartners. Each 6th grade student will have that as an option as well.
Warren-Walker has an on-going relationship with the San Diego River Foundation. We have our annual "spruce up" the River Park in October. Our Science Department is starting a three year partnership to monitor a section of the River mouth in conjunction with a grant the Foundation has received. Classes will go once a quarter to keep track of native and non-native plants and animals.
One of the favorite projects students have done over the years is a mural painting along the river. There is an upcoming date in which our students can participate - April 1 from 9 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Be sure to sign up.
As Muhammad Ali once said,"Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth". Our students are well on their way to paying their rent.
