2017 and Beyond by Headmistress Pam Volker

As we begin a new year, we take pause to reflect on what we do well, what we need to improve upon now, and what to do at some point as we prepare our students for the future.  Wherever this reflection takes us, we must always honor and nurture the sense of wonder in every child.  As educators, we must believe as told by Socrates, “Wonder is the beginning of wisdom.”

We have designed our multi-faceted program so that a well-rounded foundation of knowledge feeds the desire to learn for a lifetime. We already know that we cannot teach anyone everything they’ll need to know.  Instead we must teach what is necessary, so that ongoing learning is the result of an active, curious mind that is ready to search for more, connecting to what is previously known, remembering what is meaningful, yearning to understand, and wanting to create anew.

Additionally, we need to foster in our students their natural strengths and uncover areas of needed growth.  Good educators always cultivate talents and interests, while pairing them with new information, necessary instruction, and plenty of practice.  Often in doing so, new aptitudes are uncovered and unexplored topics become remarkably attractive.

So, our resolution will be of this mindset:  We will provide educational experiences in a broad range of subject areas, make each school day interesting and challenging, value each child’s contributions, and foster a natural sense of wonder.

“The larger the island of knowledge, the longer the shoreline of wonder.”  (by Huston Smith)
