FRIENDSHIP AND BUILDING A CARING COMMUNITY
The 2019-2020 school year is here, along with the opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones. All children need to feel like they belong, that they are important, and that they can make a difference at school (and in life). Having the encouragement and support of friends is important to the success of fulfilling each of these needs.
What are the character traits and actions of a good friend?
- Genuine concern and respect
- Sharing and taking turns
- Choosing to make a positive difference in someone else's life
- Seeking and finding ways to solve problems or disagreements
Families can discuss each of these qualities during the month of September at home to underscore the lessons and activities that will take place during the school day. At Warren-Walker School, we believe that "education in virtues - those good dispositions of the heart and mind that are regularly put into actions - is the foundation to solid character development." (Ryan, Kevin and Karen Bohlin, "Views, Values, or Virtues?," Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character)
Being friendly is the best way to make one or many friends!
